The Many Faces of Bryan Christ

January 19, 2024 | Montgomery County, TX

Voters attend candidate forums to learn more about the candidates. But what do you do when a candidate inflates their résumé and changes the story of who they are every time you see them? Such is the case with Montgomery County Republican Party Chairman Bryan Christ. This has become so commonplace that people have started calling him “Lyin’ Bryan,” a name that is certainly well deserved.

Bryan Christ won the County Chair race in 2020 with the help of his political consultant wife, the former County Chair’s endorsement, and a whole host of “Good ‘Ole Boy” financial support. Prior to winning the race to lead the Montgomery County Republican Party, Christ had never attended a Republican Party County Executive Committee (CEC) Meeting and had no management experience whatsoever.

Christ’s Invented Résumé

On the campaign trail in 2020, Christ introduced himself as an IT consultant at one forum, but later claimed to be the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Information Officer (CIO) of over 25 different companies after figuring out that not having any management or leadership experience was going to hurt his chances of winning the race.

After one of the forums where Christ had, once again, inflated his résumé by claiming to hold CEO and CIO positions, someone asked him which companies he was working for in those positions. Christ responded that he could not disclose the names of any companies due to non-disclosure agreements.

Now, anyone who works in the business world knows that CEOs and CIOs are not prohibited from telling people the name of the company they work for. That’s not something for which you would sign a non-disclosure agreement.

Christ Makes False Claims at Candidate Forums

In the 2022 election, Chairman Christ ran unopposed but this election cycle, the circus is back in town.

At the first candidate forum of the 2024 Primary Election cycle, hosted by the Montgomery County Eagle Forum at Grace Woodlands Church on January 4, “Lyin’ Bryan” was in action again. Attendees got to hear Christ boast of his two greatest accomplishments since he has been in office; first, that the Hispanic vote in Montgomery County had increased by 4 percent while he was in office, and second, that he was proud of his support for the Texas Youth Summit.

As to the Hispanic vote expanding by 4 percent in Montgomery County since Chairman Christ has been in office, the Hispanic vote has shifted to the GOP by 8 percent nationally. This means that the Montgomery County Republican Party has vastly underperformed in this area under Chairman Christ.

With regards to his support of the Texas Youth Summit, is that something that Chairman Christ accomplished? Perhaps he also supported the Astros when they won the pennant. Does that mean that Chairman Christ by his support of the Astros accomplished something?

But when you consider Chairman Christ’s dismal performance as County Chairman, it only makes sense that he would need to invent accomplishments to tout during his campaign. Here are a few of the false claims fabricated by Chairman Christ so far during January’s candidate forums in an effort to distract voters from his horrible record:

1) Chairman Christ claims that there are people within the Republican Party who are trying to eliminate the Primary Election.

The Montgomery County Republican Party and the Republican Party of Texas are unaware of anyone in the party who is trying to eliminate the Primary Election. This claim has been refuted publicly by state and local party committee members.

2) Chairman Christ claims that there are people in the Republican Party trying to keep Republicans off the ballot if the County Chair “deems them not Republican enough.”

There is no rule that has been adopted or proposed to allow the County Chair to keep someone off the ballot if the County Chair “deems them not Republican enough.” This claim also has been refuted publicly by state and local party committee members.

3) Chairman Christ claims that the Texas Supreme Court ruled in his favor regarding the Petition for Writ of Mandamus filed by the party in an attempt to compel the Chairman to fulfill his duties as an elected official.

Chairman Christ is attempting to use a procedural denial to insinuate that the Supreme Court sided with him, all the while knowing that the denial simply indicates that the Supreme Court will not hear the case.

4) Chairman Christ made several false statements regarding the mediation conducted by the Republican Party of Texas mediation team.

A) Chairman Christ claimed that each side was supposed to have three people representing them, but the County Executive Committee (CEC) majority team showed up with four and one of the members of that team was not even a member of the CEC.

The truth is that Chairman Christ insisted that he have four people on his team and then showed up with five since his lawyer participated remotely. The Precinct Chair majority team was prepared to bring only three, but included another person since Chairman Christ insisted on having four people on his team. The only person involved on either team that was not a member of the CEC was Chairman Christ’s attorney.

B) Chairman Christ claimed that his team put forth the only offer and that it was rejected without a counter-offer from the County Executive Committee majority team.

The truth is that the County Executive Committee (CEC) majority was trying to bring the party together by requesting the mediation and Chairman Christ had to be forced to participate by Republican Party of Texas Chairman, Matt Rinaldi. Chairman Christ and his team then undermined the process by being unwilling to cooperate to find a way forward. This is detailed in the Mediation Report provided by the Republican Party of Texas mediation team. It should also be mentioned that when Chairman Christ made this false claim during the January 4 candidate forum, an audible gasp could be heard from audience members who were aware of the proceedings and seemed to be in shock that he would stand in a church and lie so boldly.

C) Chairman Christ claimed that one of the two members of the Republican Party of Texas (RPT) mediation team, who is a member of the RPT Officials Committee, had no business participating in the mediation.

The truth is, Chairman Christ was well aware that the mediation team would be comprised of the State Party Chair Matt Rinaldi and Matt Patrick, who is a member of the RPT Officials Committee. At no time prior to, during, or after the mediation did Chairman Christ object to either of their participation. It was only after the Mediation Report was released that Chairman Christ began complaining and trying to discredit the Mediation Report and the mediators.

D) Chairman Christ claimed that the Mediation Report was full of half-truths and lies.

The truth is, the mediation process was supposed to be confidential, but the County Executive Committee (CEC) majority team asked the mediation team if they would agree to release the report if Chairman Christ tried to abuse the confidentiality of the process to lie to the public about what happened during mediation. The mediation team agreed.

Then, immediately following the mediation process, as anticipated, Chairman Christ sent out a news release in which he misrepresented what had happened during mediation and accused the CEC majority team of being uncooperative. It is believed that Chairman Christ felt comfortable lying to the public because he believed that the Mediation Report refuting his statements was confidential and would not be released. However, the RPT Mediation Report was subsequently released for the sole purpose of refuting Chairman Christ’s lies regarding the mediation.

With each claim, Christ will point to a binder and exclaim, “And I have proof!” But he does not share the actual proof or documentation that is supposedly encased in the binder. Since none of what he is saying is true, he has no proof of anything. Questioning or challenging him on his outrageous claims just leads to yet another rabbit trail.

It is clear that Chairman Christ’s strategy at the forums is to deflect from his opponent’s vision for the party and her strategy for healing the division by overwhelming the audience with so many lies that his opponent has to spend her allotted time untangling his mess and refuting falsehoods for voters.

For an unbiased assessment of Chairman Christ’s leadership, read the official Mediation Report from the Republican Party of Texas. (As noted above, the report was originally confidential, but the Republican Party of Texas was forced to release it because Chairman Christ sent emails to Montgomery County voters stating false information about the mediation process and results.)
