The Truth About Property Taxes

by Texas Representative Steve Toth, House District 15
Over the last week a slew of emails and texts from Representatives have been filling the inboxes of Texans. Perhaps you've received one? It probably said something like “Texas just passed $51 Billion in property tax relief - the largest in state history.”
This is simply dishonest.
The Truth?
$51 billion is the amount of cumulative relief over the last four sessions. In reality, we only approved $3.5 billion in new relief.
World-renowned economist and PHD, Vance Ginn explains in a recent article, “of the $51 billion, only $3.5 billion is truly new property tax relief that requires legislation this session. Another $3 billion was already baked into current law, passed under HB 3 in 2019, and would happen automatically unless the Legislature deliberately chooses not to fund it. So at most, only $3.5 billion of new relief is at stake—barely a drop in the bucket compared to the more than $24 billion in over collected taxpayer money (the “surplus”) and the $28.5 billion sitting in the Rainy Day Fund.”

Like I said, I will not misrepresent the facts to you. After years of promises by Texas Legislators to provide substantial tax relief, the truth is that most of you have felt very little relief at all.
Texans feel cheated. And they have every right to.
