The Democrats were given control of the Texas House by Speaker Dustin Burrows, Rep. Dade Phelan, Rep. Will Metcalf, and a minority of Republicans who joined with the Democrats to elect Burrows as Speaker of the House.
Now look what has happened. The budget the House Appropriations Committee will be voting on today is a liberal landslide!
NewsRadio 740 KTRH reported on Rep. Brian Harrison’s video blasting the leadership of the Texas House after Rep. Harrison (House District 10) finally got his hands on a copy of the 1,500-page, $340 billion Texas budget. He was then asked to vote on it less than 20 hours later.
“I can confirm the House Appropriations Committee will be voting today on the most liberal, bloated budget in Texas history,” Rep. Harrison said.
In the video, he called the budget a “liberal train-wreck” and an “outrage.” He also said the budget funds DEI, transgender ideology, and explodes the size of the Texas bureaucracy.
Rep. Harrison went on to point out what the budget DOESN’T do, saying, “This budget does not put our state on a path to eliminate property taxes. Hell, I’m not even sure there's any real property tax relief whatsoever in this budget.”
He says the budget is an “outrage” and was written “in secret” and “lawlessly.”
This is what happens when you turn the House leadership over to self-centered egotists with no loyalty to their constituents!
Betrayal in the Texas House
Going into the 89th Legislative Session, Republicans across Texas were very hopeful. They had worked hard to send a strong majority to the Texas House (88 of 150 members) and Republicans were poised to accomplish some big things. Unfortunately, on December 7, 2024, events took a drastic turn when Dustin Burrows and 26 Republicans walked out of the Republican Caucus and joined with the Democrats to elect Burrows as Speaker of the House.
Sadly, two House members from Montgomery County were in the group that broke with the Republican Caucus and voted with the Democrats to elect Burrows as Speaker. Those two Representatives are Cecil Bell (HD 3) and Will Metcalf (HD 16).
For their actions in dividing the House Republican Caucus and joining with the Democrats, the Montgomery County Republican Party drafted a county-wide censure resolution against Representatives Bell and Metcalf that passed by a vote of 52-32 on March 4, 2025.
