Urge Rep. Will Metcalf to Vote for the Caucus Nominee for Texas House Speaker
Establishment Republicans are ignoring the clear mandate delivered by their voters in the November election. Scroll to the end to take action.

MONTGOMERY, TX - For too long, Texans have suffered under a Republican-led House that cooperates with Democrats and liberal special interests to block clear directives from the voters who elected them.
In the last Texas Legislative Session, we watched as promising bills were put forward, only to be stalled and ultimately blocked by committee chairs appointed by former Texas House Speaker, Dade Phelan, who President Trump famously called “California Dade” for his alignment with Democrat policies.
In response, Montgomery County (and all of America) just delivered Republicans the clearest mandate we’ve had in decades—one that goes all the way down the ballot. We want our beloved Lone Star State and our great nation back.
You, the grassroots, have given your time and treasure to elect Republicans who will fight against open borders, men in women’s sports, lawfare against patriots, obscene books in schools, unaffordable property taxes, Chinese purchase of Texas land, taxpayer-funded lobbying, and more.
Yet, in an astonishing move, a group of 26 Texas House Republicans is turning their backs on the mandate from voters and once again working with Democrats to get their choice for Texas Speaker elected!
On December 7, the Texas House Republican Caucus met in Austin to select a new candidate to replace Dade Phelan as Speaker of the House—one they could all vote for as a unified body on January 14, the first day of the 89th Texas Legislative Session.
Their task was simple. They needed to choose a candidate for Speaker who will allow Republicans—not Democrats—to truly run the Texas House.
The Republican Caucus majority voted to nominate State Representative David Cook, a proven conservative who is committed to Texas GOP priorities and Trump’s agenda. Representative Cook has publicly promised to end the long-standing practice of empowering Democrats with committee chairmanships so that the conservative bills Texans are demanding can be passed through the Texas House.
This should have been the beginning of a new era in the Texas Legislature.
Instead, 26 Republican Representatives, who are supporting Representative Dustin Burrows for Speaker, chose to walk out of the Republican Caucus rather than get behind Representative Cook. This violated their own Caucus rules, which had been agreed upon at the beginning of the Caucus meeting and written by Representative Burrows himself!
Read more about Representative Burrows in our article, Beware of Phelan 2.0.
One of the Representatives who walked out of the Caucus with Representative Burrows is Montgomery County’s own Representative Will Metcalf from House District 16.
The actions of these 26 Republicans, including Representative Metcalf, will once again make the Texas House beholden to Democrats and taxpayer-funded lobbyists instead of the voters who elected them.
Since Representative Burrows did not secure a majority within the Republican Caucus, he has taken his support outside the party and recruited 38 Democrats to support him in his race for Speaker.
As the County Executive Committee (CEC) for the Montgomery County Republican Party, we have a responsibility to monitor the actions of our elected officials and encourage them to live up to the expectations voters have for them and the platform on which they were elected.
This morning, the Montgomery County Republican Party passed a Resolution urging “all members of the Texas House Republican Caucus to unite behind Representative David Cook and to immediately and publicly commit to vote for him in the floor vote for Texas Speaker of the House on January 14.”
The Resolution calls on Representative Metcalf “to publicly disavow participation in Representative Burrows’s attempt to secure the Speakership against the wishes of the Republican Caucus using a majority-Democratic coalition and to publicly support Representative Cook in accordance with the Caucus vote and with the Republican Party of Texas Platform.”
“We will consider a vote for Representative Burrows or any candidate who depends on Democrat votes to be elected, and was not supported by the Texas House Republican Caucus, or a vote for a House Rule to allow a secret ballot vote for the Speaker election, to be a violation of the Republican Party of Texas Legislative Priority #4, No Democrat Chairs, for censure under Republican Party of Texas Rule #44.”
You can read the details of the Resolution here.
Considering the actions by Burrows and his allies, we need our Republican Caucus members to immediately unite behind David Cook in the race for House Speaker.
Texans deserve a united Republican House.
