Montgomery County GOP calls for immediate resignation of Speaker Phelan and censure by state party

CONROE, TX - The Montgomery County Republican Party passed resolutions today calling for the immediate resignation of Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan and joining in the censure of Speaker Phelan by the Orange County Executive Committee. Orange County is the largest county in Speaker Phelan’s home district.
During the 88th Legislative Session, Speaker Phelan failed in his duty as an elected Republican Representative by allowing many Republican Priority Bills to die in the House. Many of these bills directly impact the safety of Texans, putting citizens in imminent danger.
Resolution Calling for Speaker Phelan’s Resignation
The first resolution, which was passed unanimously, provides detailed information on the harm done by Speaker Phelan’s decision to appoint Democrat committee chairs in direct opposition to the Legislative Priorities selected by more than 5,000 grassroots delegates who attended the 2022 State Party Convention. In the most recent Texas Republican Primary Election, 81.24 percent of voters voted against the practice of appointing Democrat committee chairs.

Resolution Supporting the Censure of Speaker Phelan
The second resolution, which also passed unanimously, calls upon the Republican Party of Texas and State Executive Committee to honor the Orange County Executive Committee’s call to censure House Speaker Dade Phelan for his “failure to represent and execute his duties as an elected Representative of District 21 and while serving as Speaker of the House.”
A censure of Speaker Phelan by the State Executive Committee would allow the Republican Party of Texas to expend resources opposing him in the 2024 Republican Primary Election. True conservative leadership is needed in the Texas House to address the huge issues facing the State of Texas, including border security and election integrity.
