It's Time To Take Back the Texas House!

Texas House Speaker is being chosen this Saturday, December 7

At the second state convention in a row, the 2024 Republican Party of Texas State Convention, delegates approved the priority of No Democrat Chairs. It was in fact the 4th highest chosen priority of the 15 put forth.

Year after year, Republicans are elected and given control of both houses of the Texas Legislature, and year after year, important work is squandered as good bills are killed in committee. This is largely because Democrats, whose platform affirms everything that Republicans are against, are shockingly appointed as chair and vice-chair in many of these committees.

In the 88th Legislative Session, while the Texas Senate was hard at work approving good bills on Election Integrity, Border Security, School Choice, and Protecting Children, the House wasted precious time, and many good bills died in committee. Sadly, this was not just done by Democrats, but that is a story for another time.  The very least the Speaker of the House should do is exercise the power given to him by the electorate and appoint Republicans to all House chairmanships.

To that end, the Montgomery County Republican Party approved two resolutions aimed at holding our representatives accountable for their vote for Speaker.

You can read those resolutions here.

Now, Dade Phelan has announced he will no longer seek the Speaker position. It seems that one of Dade's lieutenants, Dustin Burrows HD 83, has stepped in. If he or another “Dade Phelan 2.0” is chosen, we can expect the practice of awarding Democrats committee chair positions to continue. This would be a continual slap in the face to Republicans who clearly do not approve of this practice.

ACTIONS TO TAKE

1. Contact your Republican Texas House Representative

This Saturday, December 7, the Texas Republican House members will meet (caucus) to decide who they will vote for as a body on January 14th.

Now is the time to contact your state representative to tell them to adhere to the Republican Party of Texas Legislative Priority 4 - NO DEMOCRAT CHAIRS and to support a speaker who will do just that!

2.  Go to the capitol this Saturday, December 7th to show your support for a Speaker who will appoint only Republicans as committee chairs.

The House Republican Caucus meeting is a closed meeting with secret ballots, but we can show up to be seen by the representatives, and demonstrate our support for the No Democrat Chair priority and a speaker who will support that.

Join other grassroots advocates in the halls of the Capital Extension on Level E2 close to the Texas Seal, between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. Get to know other like-minded Texans, and be the first to know the results of this important meeting. Members are expected to go to lunch at 11:30 and caucus at noon.

Tom Glass is coordinating this event. RSVP HERE

Show up, be respectful, and wear your "Ban Dem Chairs” red shirts from last session, or hold hand-written signs saying “REFORM!” or “No Dem Chairs,” etc.
