HB 20 Update: Sent to State Affairs to Resolve Point of Order

May 10, 2023 | Austin, TX

While an endless stream of illegal immigrants cross the border and our Texas National Guard stands in the breach, our legislators in the Texas House of Representatives are arguing over the wording of a bill designed to help protect us from the incursion.

HB 20 by Representative Matt Schaefer of District 6 was brought to the floor yesterday for a vote and returned to committee on the strength of the Point of Order technique of stopping bills, to which Democrats and some Republicans object.

Speaker Dade Phelan’s ruling on the Point of Order is found here: https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/88R/poo/pdf/88R-HB20-Publish.pdf

Whether the technicalities can be worked out and returned for a vote in time for this session is anybody’s guess.  Meanwhile, even the mayors of Chicago and New York are complaining about their inability to handle the immigrants coming into their cities, with minuscule numbers compared to what Texas and other border states are experiencing.

How do you feel about the citizens of Texas being left to fend for ourselves while anyone who cares to streams in? This is an urgent and deadly situation. Tell the House State Affairs Committee what you think and that you expect quick action.
