New County Appraisal District Board Elections

For the first time, voters will have a direct voice in selecting representatives to advocate for them on the board.

The May 4 Uniform Election will be voters’ first opportunity to elect representatives to the Montgomery County Appraisal District Board of Directors. As part of last November’s Constitutional Amendments Election, voters approved Proposition 4, which included a provision authorizing the election of three additional Appraisal District Board members in counties with a population of 75,000 or more.

The election of these new Appraisal District Board members will expand the size of an appraisal district’s board from six members to nine members. These additional three members will be decided in the May 4th Uniform Election. Each of the newly elected board members will serve a four-year term that begins on July 1 and ends on December 31, 2026.

Until now, the Appraisal District Board consisted of the county tax assessor-collector and five other members appointed by the taxing units that participate in the district in the manner prescribed by Section 6.03 of the Tax Code. This will be the first time voters will have a direct voice in selecting representatives to advocate for them on the board.

Another change taking place will the process of appointing Appraisal Review Board members. Currently, members of the Appraisal Review Board, the board that reviews property appraisal value protests, are appointed by a district judge.

Representative Will Metcalf explained, “Going forward, the Appraisal Review Board (ARB) members will be appointed by the Appraisal District Board of Directors, as opposed to their current appointment by a district judge, and at least two of the elected board members must approve an appointed ARB member as a part of a majority vote. This election is essential because one of the most important rights as a taxpayer is your right to protest your property appraisal value to the ARB. You should protest if you disagree with the appraisal district valuation or any of the appraisal district's actions concerning your property value. This puts the ARB in the hands of we the people, the taxpayers, with this new board makeup.”

Precinct 110 Chair Luis Pedraza presented an overview of the new board positions at the April 4th Montgomery County Eagle Forum meeting and several candidates were on hand to introduce themselves. Click here to watch the video and access Pedraza’s presentation materials.

Election Day is May 4 and Early Voting begins April 22.
