Take Action on Noncitizens Voting in Texas!

Action Alert!

October 11, 2024 | Austin, TX

Updated alert from Rachel Horton, Republican Party of Texas Legislative Priorities Committee Co-Chair

Dear Friends,

We're in the middle of election season, and our Texas representation in Austin needs to hear from ALL of us about this troubling issue. We're asking that you take TWO actions. Please read carefully and act immediately.

BACKGROUND

As many of you may know, the Texas Secretary of State is our election administrator for the state of Texas. Lately, there’s been a LOT of news featuring the voter ID laws and making sure our voters are actually U.S. Citizens.

The Texas Department of Public Safety issues a Limited Term License for noncitizens who are here lawfully and need to drive. This license must be renewed every year and is invalid when the noncitizen is either naturalized or their status has expired.

More information on this issue can be found in this recent Texas Scorecard article.

On Tuesday, October 8, the Secretary of State issued a four-page advisory that essentially describes all the ways the Limited Term License may be used as a valid voter ID. This is UNACCEPTABLE. The Limited Term License should NOT be considered a valid form of ID in order to cast a ballot in a citizen-only election.

The Senate State Affairs Committee will meet next Wednesday, October 16, at 9am to "evaluate the current safeguards in place to prevent noncitizens from voting in elections and recommend legislation to facilitate the removal of noncitizen voters from the voter rolls, as well as legislation to prevent noncitizens from registering to vote in Texas."

View the Senate Notice of Public Hearing.

GREAT TIMING. They will hear from Christina Adkins, the Director of Elections for the Secretary of State, and they need to hear from YOU too.

PLEASE ACT NOW

There are two actions we are asking you to take. Please ACT NOW. The goal is to have the Secretary of State REMOVE “Limited Licenses” from any list as being an “acceptable form of voter identification.”

ACTION 1: Please call the Secretary of State at the number below. Select Option 3 (Voter-Related Information) and let them know that Limited Term Licenses should be unacceptable as a Voter ID.

Please be courteous but firm in our insistence that noncitizens should NOT be allowed to present Limited Term Licenses as a legitimate voter ID.

ACTION 2: Please contact the following members of the Texas Senate to encourage them to help us keep the pressure on the Secretary of State. They are our voice in Austin!

Please be kind, be courteous, but don't take no for an answer. If you talk to a staffer, be sure to mention your name and where you're from.

NOTE: You do not have to be a constituent of the following senators to call them. They are representing all of us by serving on the Senate State Affairs Committee.
