Texas GOP Chairman’s Update
June 17, 2024 | Media Inquiries: press@mctxgop.org
Texas Republicans,
It’s been close to a month since our convention adjourned, and much has happened. I have hit the ground running, meeting with staff, grassroots supporters, and donors to ensure our party is strong and ready to win in November. We’ve released our excellent Platform and Legislative Priorities, which you voted on.
On the other side of the aisle, the Texas Democrats showed us their radical agenda by hosting a drag queen at their convention who called for the continued chemical castration and mutilation of children. The Democrats’ convention also ended in another quorum break, and they had to adjourn without passing party rules. This reminded me of the incredible commitment our delegates showed at the Republican convention, where a majority returned after dinner on Friday night and worked until midnight to pass our platform. Clearly, Texas Republicans are fired up to elect Donald Trump and Senator Ted Cruz in November, while the Democrats, following their leader, Sleepy Joe, can’t even muster a quorum.
End the Practice of Democrat Chairs
Finally, there has been a lot of talk about two competing documents and their visions for the Texas House, which I want to address. The first document, signed by a majority of the Republican Caucus (46 members), states that those members will only vote for a candidate for speaker who appoints Republicans as committee chairs. This aligns with our Legislative Priorities and would end the horrible practice where the Republican majority voluntarily gives power to Democrats. You can see which members signed and read the full statement here. We applaud the members who have signed this document and encourage more to join them so we can all unite around our Priorities! Please call to ask your State Representative to sign this document.
The second document presents a different path for the Texas House. It underhandedly goes by the name “The Texas Conservative Commitment” and amorphously lays out 10 policy priorities the Austin Uniparty has spent the last year telling us they already accomplished. While it is always encouraging to see lawmakers work together to advance conservative policies, the “Texas Conservative Commitment” is clearly designed to advance alternative policies in lieu of the Texas GOP Legislative Priorities. Most frustratingly, this commitment is silent on the issue of Democrat chairs, which members of Speaker Dade Phelan’s leadership team are trying to protect. You can read the full “commitment” and see the signers here. I strongly encourage you to contact your State Representative today and ask them to stop this practice. Republican voters are eager to unite and work to defeat the Democrats in November. Texas House Republicans should stop trying to empower them in January.
Abraham George
Texas GOP Chairman
