SB 12, protecting children from sexual performances

March 22, 2023 | Austin, TX

Whose idea was it to invite drag queens into our taxpayer-funded public institutions to tell stories to young children?

As to the ‘family friendly’ performances offered by some private businesses, it is disturbing to imagine a family that would find it friendly entertainment for small children.

And why are they insisting on it?

Senator Bryan Hughes (SD 1) must have had similar questions. He has authored SB 12, “restricting certain sexually oriented performances on public property, on the premises of a commercial enterprise, or in the presence of a child; authorizing a civil penalty; creating a criminal offense.”

The bill has been assigned to the State Affairs Committee; Hughes serves as the chairman of this committee; Senator Paul Bettencourt (SD 4) also is on this committee.

Not all drag queen performances are exactly sexually oriented, although one might argue that their sexual nature is inferred. Regardless of the intent of these performances, it would seem that protecting children should trump their rights to ‘entertain’ vulnerable children.

Let your legislators know if you agree with Senator Hughes.
