On April 4, I watched Congressman Dan Crenshaw on CNN discussing gun control. After the interview, I contacted a member of Congressman Crenshaw’s team and shared that I appreciated the way the Congressman handled this issue.

“We have armed security officers protecting our airports, our politicians, and even CNN’s offices,” said Congressman Crenshaw. “Why shouldn’t we have the same protection for our children going to school? Most schools already have armed security guards but we need to make sure they ALL do.”

I told his team member that the Congressman’s interview had inspired me to write the “Our Kids First Act,” which incorporates some of Representative Crenshaw’s talking points from his CNN interview. This legislative idea is born out of the belief that America should prioritize our children over foreign aid. I also reached out to Congressman Morgan Luttrell and passed the “Our Kids First Act” on to him as well.

“Our Kids First Act” key points:

  • Would require that ALL schools across America be fully funded for two full-time, armed security guards at $80,000 per year each.

  • Would require that funding for the “Our Kids First Act” happen before one red cent is allocated for foreign aid.

  • Would require that foreign aid may be considered but only in an amount not to exceed the amount spent on protecting our children through the “Our Kids First Act.”

  • Would require that if a school refuses to use the money for armed guards as allocated, then their share of the money would be deposited into a fund which may only be used to make American schools more secure.

My belief is that when voters see that politicians and school administrators are more concerned about sending American taxpayer dollars to other countries than they are about protecting our kids, it might be harder for them to get elected. Also, if school boards refuse to hire armed security personnel as directed by the “Our Kids First Act,” it would give those communities the opportunity to elect people who are truly committed to protecting their children and educators.

The optics of Democrats arguing on the floor of Congress that sending American taxpayer dollars to other countries is a higher priority than protecting our children and educators just might wake up enough Americans to transform this country.
