Local attorney shining light on judicial system corruption in Texas

With soft-on-crime policies spreading like wildfire and wreaking havoc across the United States, emboldened citizens are taking a stand to stop the source of the fire right where it starts: our liberal criminal defense system.

Compromised and corrupted district attorneys across the country are failing to act with integrity, failing to uphold their oath of office, and failing to prosecute the criminals who are plaguing our communities.

On Jan. 20, 2023, a lawsuit was filed petitioning for the removal of Nueces County District Attorney Mark Gonzalez from office.

The suit, which was filed by Colby Wiltse, a resident of Nueces County and State Director for County Citizens Defending Freedom (CCDF-USA), alleges that Mr. Gonzalez’s conduct has been tainted with incompetence, misconduct, failure to give bond, and that he is unfit and unable to discharge his official duties. His actions, along with countless other DAs across the country, are resulting in a revolving-door criminal justice system where offenders, even violent offenders, are released back onto the streets.

The petition for removal is a citizen’s tool being utilized to reestablish law and order, and protect the citizens of Nueces County. Texas does not have a traditional impeachment or recall process for elected officials for incompetence or official misconduct. County citizens, however, have the authority with a Petition for Removal under the Texas Constitution and by Local Government Code 87.

Gonzalez, first elected in 2016, has been under increased scrutiny during his current term for his high rate of criminal dismissals, mishandling of murder cases, mishandling of evidence, lack of oversight, and failing to pursue charges against violent offenders.

A petition for removal of a Texas County District Attorney under Chapter 87 of Texas Local Government Code recently occurred in El Paso County, with similar facts and circumstances as those in Mark Gonzalez’s tenure. As a trial was set to prosecute the case for that attorney’s removal, El Paso District Attorney Yvonne Rosales resigned ahead of the removal trial.

County citizens have the right to full accountability from their public officials, particularly concerning public safety and the rule of law.

“Our citizens deserve better,” said Wiltse. “We have built this community, and we deserve to live here and raise our families without fear of criminal activity and without fear of being attacked for doing what we know is right.”

Governor Abbott makes End Revolving-Door Bail an emergency priority

At his State of the State address on Feb. 16, Governor Abbott announced End Revolving- Door Bail as one of his seven emergency items for the 88th Legislative Session.

“We must shut and lock that revolving door,” he said.

He’s asking the legislature to:

  • Propose a constitutional amendment allowing judges to deny bail for the most violent offenders

  • Pass legislation to hold judges and district attorneys accountable for reckless decisions compromising the safety and security of Texans
