Colony Ridge: MCRP Legislative Committee Citizen Journalists Investigate

Colony Ridge -

MCRP citizen journalists take a road trip to explore

October 5, 2023 | Colony Ridge, TX

Colony Ridge has garnered national and state attention, with the entire US Congressional delegation from Texas calling on both Governor Abbott and Attorney General Paxton to investigate the development located in Liberty County. Lt. Governor Dan Patrick and Texas Representative Steve Toth (HD 15) have both toured Colony Ridge. And the Texas GOP authored a resolution calling on the Governor to call a special session on Colony Ridge; Special Session #3 is set to begin Monday, October 9.

In response the developers of Colony Ridge have invited legislators to tour the community at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 5. Any legislators interested will be shown around the neighborhood, hear a presentation on the operation, and be allowed to interact with residents and staff.

Development CEO John Harris says the claims that the community is a ‘colonia’ or an illegal alien settlement and that the housing and infrastructure are substandard are ‘preposterous and unfounded.’

Given all this attention, members of the Legislative Committee for the Montgomery County Republican Party decided to take their own tour of the development.

Road Trip to the Colony

It was a rainy day, but curiosity got the better of us. Spurred by reports of a community of illegal immigrants just 30 miles to our east, members of our Legislative Committee decided to see for themselves whatever could be seen.

We’re just now really hearing about Colony Ridge, but the community is already 10 years old and has some 75,000 residents with plans to about triple that. So, our citizen reporters expected to see a lot of infrastructure, recent roads, and construction.

They did eventually find the section with new infrastructure, but not before wandering through what is likely the older areas of the settlement. There they found collections of ancient motorhomes and other run-down buildings, poor and filthy, the abodes of people who put together whatever they can, as they can. They drove through these sections for quite some time, wondering where the developers were building.

Eventually, they did find the newer section with decent roads, roundabouts, gas stations, convenience stores, and a beautiful new school. According to a report from the Texas Education Agency, Cleveland ISD has had a tripling of enrollment in the past decade.

Our intrepid tourists tell us that they could clearly see there is a plan underway for many more residents.

Many Questions Remain

What does any of this mean?  It provokes more questions than answers. There is great poverty at work in Colony Ridge, as well as great plans by the developers.

The big question is who are the residents of Colony Ridge? Do we have reason to be worried about them? Reports from the area are that law enforcement has essentially been treating the area as a ‘no-go zone.’ From another perspective, we might ask, what is wrong with all of this?

There was obviously an orchestrated plan by our current federal administration to open our borders. Is there a plan to resettle all of these people? If so, do we get to know what it is? Even the people from sanctuary cities are recoiling at the results of the limited illegals they have had to absorb.

And who is footing the bill for all this? Are Liberty County residents building new facilities and infrastructure for these new residents in their midst?

Are the illegal immigrants amongst them contributing in any way? Are they working? Paying taxes? Are they receiving government benefits?

Will they be receiving mail-in ballots come November?

So many questions, so few answers. Who knows, maybe we’ll get some in the next special session. Anyone taking bets?
