Call to Action! Ask for Meaningful Border Security Measures in Special Session
July 12, 2023 | Austin, TX
As the state of Texas continues to deal with an influx of mass illegal immigration, we urge you to contact Governor Greg Abbott and insist that we take up this important issue either as an extension of the special session still in progress or as a new special session.
Since the Texas Legislature appears to be making short work of Property Tax Relief legislation, for which the second session was called, now is a good time to push for real border security legislation.
Here are some of the bills that were proposed in the regular session. Most notably, HB 20 would have created a law enforcement unit called the Border Protection Unit, which would have had the authority to arrest, detain and deter people from crossing the Texas-Mexico border illegally.
Although House Speaker Dade Phelan claimed it as a priority bill, he allowed a Point of Order procedure from opponents to send it back to committee, where it died.
Border Security Bills in Regular Session
HB 7 - financing public services needed for illegal immigration
SCR 23 - A concurrent resolution that would take steps to declare an invasion at the Texas border
HB 20 - Border Protection Unit
HB 65 - Increase criminal penalties for unlawful entry
HB 82 - Interstate compact for border security
HB 800 - Punishment for criminal conduct involving human smuggling, operating stash houses or evading arrest or detention.
SCR 29 - A resolution declaring an invasion by narco-terrorists, opening the door to accelerated wall construction and demanding that Congress deploy the military to the southern border.
“If Gov. Greg Abbott wants to truly address the illegal alien invasion of Texas, he should declare an invasion and follow through on removing illegal aliens and add mandating E-Verify, ending in-state tuition for illegals, taxing remittances, and prohibiting Chinese nationals from buying up Texas land to the special session call,” said Cary Cheshire of Texas For Strong Borders.
TAKE ACTION
Contact Governor Abbott and urge him to place border security as a special session priority.
