House Bill (HB) 5138 passed the Texas House on May 9th and has been referred to the Senate State Affairs Committee. This is a Republican Party of Texas Legislative Priority Bill under the Secure Texas Elections Priority.
"The Texas House passed legislation that will give my office additional tools to prosecute voter fraud and violations of the election code when local officials fail to act," said Attorney General Ken Paxton.
AG Paxton has been advocating for the Texas Legislature to return power to the Office of the Attorney General to directly prosecute criminal offenses related to election law, closing loopholes and stopping rogue prosecutors from ignoring violations.
Texans deserve elections that are fair, free, and protected from abuse, and HB 5138 delivers.
