Official Statement on Chairman’s Misleading July 17 Fundraiser
May 26, 2023 | Media Inquiries: info@mctxgop.org
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX - Chairman Bryan Christ is holding a July 17 fundraiser for his Political Action Committee (PAC) to fund his PAC’s new “Republican Welcome Center” headquarters. As part of this fundraiser, Chairman Christ is sending out misleading advertising materials under a Montgomery County Republican Party email header. This is very confusing to voters and potential donors. This fundraiser is not affiliated with the Montgomery County Republican Party in any way.
Invoking the name of Dr. Wally Wilkerson
Longtime Montgomery County Republican Party Chairman, Walter D. Wilkerson, issued a public statement during his tenure denouncing the use of the Republican name by outside organizations because it caused voter confusion. Fast forward to today when Chairman Christ and his wife have not only made hijacking the Republican brand and deceiving voters their main campaign strategy, but now they are dishonoring the memory of Chairman “Wally” Wilkerson by holding a July 17 “Continue the Legacy” fundraiser for their “Montgomery County Republican Club PAC” in his name, employing the deceptive electioneering tactics that Dr. Wilkerson vehemently opposed.
The “Montgomery County Republican Club PAC” was formed by Chairman Christ and his wife. Chairman Christ is the treasurer of this PAC. Their July 17 fundraiser is touted as an evening of “patriotism and worship, as well as recognition of the Republican achievements of Dr. Wally.” By invoking the name of Dr. Wilkerson, they are misleading donors into thinking that the money is somehow benefiting the Montgomery County Republican Party - it is not. These people have no shame!
False claims about Party Headquarters
The misleading fundraiser advertisement states:
“Donations received will fund the Republican Welcome Center, located at 921 W Austin Street in Conroe, and community engagement. The Republican Welcome Center is a home for Montgomery County Republican activities, and also hosts the Republican Party Headquarters and its amazing volunteers coordinated by Dorothy Woodall. During the 2024 Republican Primary season, Chairman Bryan Christ will be using the Center to accept applications for candidates to appear on the ballot. The Center will also house candidates’ signs and literature, pertinent information regarding Republican values and clubs, and voting information. We appreciate your support in funding this very necessary office space!”
The “Republican Welcome Center” located on Austin Street in Conroe is the headquarters of Chairman Christ’s PAC, not the local Republican Party!
If you are giving money to them, you are NOT supporting the Montgomery County Republican Party or the Republican Party brand in any way. You are simply giving money to fund the campaigns of Chairman Christ’s wife’s clients and candidates.
On April 2, Chairman Christ abruptly closed the longtime Party Headquarters in downtown Conroe and removed or donated its contents without notifying the majority of the County Executive Committee (CEC), made up of elected Precinct Chairs. He immediately began promoting the new “Republican Clubhouse” or “Republican Welcome Center” on Austin St. in Conroe as a replacement for the Party Headquarters, allowing him to side-step the checks and balances provided by the members of the CEC.
This is not the first time Chairman Christ has been involved in promoting a PAC meant to confuse voters. See this article from Texas Scorecard, for example.
Not everyone is welcome in the PAC’s new “Welcome Center”
While they claim that their new office is a “Welcome Center” for all Republicans, when State Republican Party Executive Committeewoman and Precinct 72 Chair, Gwen Withrow, and her husband went to see the office that Chairman Christ is advertising as the new “Party Headquarters,” Mr. Withrow was confronted by Kristin Christ, who told him that they were not welcome there. Gwen Withrow is the State Republican Executive Committeewoman for Senate District 4 and a member of the Officials Committee for the Republican Party of Texas.
Chairman Christ’s announcement above that he will be using his new PAC headquarters to “accept applications for candidates to appear on the ballot” and that the facility “will also house candidates’ signs and literature, pertinent information regarding Republican values and clubs, and voting information” represents a serious conflict of interest between his PAC activities and his duties as the County Chairman.
Some elected officials looking the other way
If you are a Conservative officeholder or candidate for office who has been deceived by these people, you should ask for a refund or just save yourself some time and cut out the middleman by writing a check directly to your opponent.
Donors to the July 17 fundraiser for Chairman Christ’s PAC are listed below on the marketing materials being sent by Chairman Christ under a Montgomery County Republican Party email header. This is extremely misleading to voters who see Chairman Christ's name associated with the new PAC “Welcome Center” and think these donors are supporting the Montgomery County Republican Party!
Please note that the “MCTX REPUBLICAN VICTORY PAC” is a Montgomery County Republican Party bank account that is controlled by Chairman Christ. This bank account apparently is now donating to the Christs’ Republican Club PAC.
“I have to say that I am really disappointed in some of the names that I see on this list because you know better, but yet you are funding the lawlessness and corruption that is destroying the local Republican Party,” said Vice Chairman Jon Bouché.
Meanwhile, the Montgomery County Republican Party Conservative majority is doing the heavy lifting by lobbying for the Republican Party of Texas’s Legislative Priorities through Legislative Alerts, making weekly visits to the State Capitol to testify at bill hearings on behalf of the grassroots, holding a prayer event for our elected officials, testifying at local school board meetings, and raising funds for Get-Out-the-Vote efforts.
