World Economic Forum concludes its 2023 Annual Meeting
January 20, 2023 | Davos, Switzerland
The World Economic Forum (WEF) gathered in Davos, Switzerland, Jan. 16 - 20, to discuss the topic, “Cooperation in a Fragmented World.” This was their first winter meeting in two years, having postponed their meetings to warmer months due to stated COVID concerns.
WEF mission
While their declared mission is “improving the state of the world through public-private cooperation,” the WEF is best known for holding an annual event welcoming billionaires arriving in private jets to an exclusive ski-resort town to lecture the world about irresponsible climate and business practices. Meeting topics are laced with climate concerns and exhortations to elevate the collective people of the world above the health of individual businesses and countries.
Greenpeace called out the hypocrisy with the following statement from Klara Maria Schenk, Transport Campaigner for Greenpeace’s European Mobility Campaign: “The rich and powerful flock to Davos in ultra-polluting, socially inequitable private jets to discuss climate and inequality behind closed doors. Davos has a perfectly adequate railway station, still these people can’t even be bothered to take the train for a trip as short as 21 km. Do we really believe that these are the people to solve the problems the world faces?”
US leaders in attendance
Former Democrat Senator John Kerry joined other US leaders at the Alpine resort of Davos to address “global, regional, and industry agendas.” Kerry was joined by US Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, FBI Director Christopher Wray, Democrat Senator Joe Manchin, Republican Governor Brian Kemp, and a delegation from the US Embassy in Switzerland.
There were 116 billionaires expected to be in attendance at the event. George Soros and Bill Gates were notable absentees.
