Call to Action! SB 330, Save our Texas Electric Grid
April 14, 2023 | Austin, TX
If you were living in Texas just two years ago, you remember it. We had a historic freeze and came within a hair of losing our electric grid. We are vulnerable and Senator Bob Hall seems to be one of the few taking that seriously.
But the bill seems to be languishing in the Senate Business and Commerce Committee, to which it was assigned.
Senator Hall put it more plainly. “The very idea that a single event causing the loss of the electric grid could plunge the entire nation back into a time without electricity, cell phones, or the internet is so overpowering that it is easier for some to ignore the threat than to plan for it.”
“Currently, the electric grid is vulnerable to a wide range of both natural and man-made existential threats, including cyber-attacks, malware, electromagnetic pulses (EMP) and geomagnetic disturbances (GMD) that would, at best, disrupt the grid, and at worst, cause the entire grid to go down,” according to analysis on the bill.
“Electricity is the second most important thing for sustaining life as we now know it and impacts almost every aspect of our modern life: healthcare, transportation, banking, sanitation, water, and food. Currently, Texas does not have a robust plan in place to address a widespread, long-term power outage. Since electricity is vital for survival, if the grid goes down, thousands of people risk losing their lives.”
We live in a sophisticated world and take so much for granted. That could all change tomorrow if we lost our grid.
Take Action
