Newly elected Board Member Misty Odenweller’s Policy Proposal will be presented as Agenda Item XI. Legal B - Review and Consider Amending Board Policy EFB Local - Instructional Resources – Library Materials.
Following are a few of the key points in Odenweller’s proposal:
· Establishes clear, unbiased book rating appropriateness for elementary, intermediate, junior high, and high school students
· Better identifies books that need to be placed under “mature content” label and notify parents to content like movie ratings
· Removes the responsibility and liability from the librarians and puts parents in control
· Provides a parental consent form to determine reading content for their child
· Gives Board members ability to provide a well-defined policy that supports the community values
· Clearly defines the process for requesting a book reconsideration if necessary
· Sets the rules for a public Book Reconsideration Committee formation and gives parents the greater involvement in the evaluation
· Sets in place the notification of the Board on any book concerns
