Parental Rights Amendment

On March 1, Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-AZ) and six original cosponsors introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives a Parental Rights Amendment to the United States Constitution. The Amendment, which has been assigned bill number HJ Res. 38, would enshrine the traditional liberty of parents to direct a child’s upbringing, education, and care as a fundamental right.

Lesko, who heads the Protect Kids Caucus in the House, believes protecting this traditional role of parents is key to keeping children healthy and safe.

Joining Representative Lesko in sponsoring the Amendment are Representatives Jeff Duncan (R-SC), Jim Banks (R-IN), Mary Miller (R-IL), Greg Steube (R-FL), Bill Posey (R-FL), and Doug Lamborn (R-CO).

The Parental Rights Amendment will protect the traditional role of parents as long recognized by the US Supreme Court, restoring the proper balance of parental authority against government decision-making. This fundamental right is so important that we cannot rely on just Supreme Court precedent. Parental rights must be established in the black and white text of the U.S. Constitution.

Parents Bill of Rights Act

In addition, Congresswoman Julia Letlow (R-LA), a mom and educator, has reintroduced her bill, the Parents Bill of Rights Act, to ensure that public schools that receive federal funds are respecting parental rights. Introduced as HR 5 with the full support of Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and House leadership, this bill will be marked up in the Education and Workforce Committee on March 8 at 10:15 am EST. You can find more information and watch the markup live on the Committee’s webpage.
