Shots fired! Republican Legislative Priorities already under assault as Legislative Session opens

January 13, 2023 | Austin, TX

Texas Speaker of the House Dade Phelan seems to be single-handedly blocking the Republican priorities voted upon by over 5,000 GOP delegates at the Texas Republican Party Convention.

Wednesday, he blocked a House Rules amendment to ban Democratic Committee Chairs, who have been unilaterally killing legislation important to Republican voters.

Later, he declared gender issues a ‘political’ issue and ineligible for discussion in a House Rules debate. In both instances, he said that House resources “may only be used for public purposes and not political purposes.”

Imagine, a body of politicians considering issues that are political!

“Some are now concerned that this ruling effectively labels gender a political and partisan topic, which would allow Democrats to follow Phelan’s precedent and raise points of order against Republican legislation addressing any issue relating to gender.

If that is the case, Republicans can expect Phelan to block debate on priority measures such as a ban on child gender mutilation or the attendance of children at drag shows," Katy Drollinger writes in Texas Scorecard.
